A freestanding wood fireplace stands in the room, so it needs no built-in cavity, only a flue. Our range includes more than 170 models from 17 brands, including Kratki, Charnwood, Northern Flame, Dovre, Heeta and Lacunza, with outputs from 5kW to 25kW. Many are closed-combustion units, built from steel, cast iron or both, with efficiencies typically between 75% and 85%. You can also choose double-sided and panoramic models, or units with an integrated log store.

As a general guide, 5kW to 8kW suits small rooms and well-insulated homes, 9kW to 14kW suits most living rooms, and larger outputs are for big open-plan spaces. Almost every product page gives a heating capacity in cubic metres (the room’s length × width × height), along with the weight and flue size, so you can compare models against your space.

Frequently asked questions:

  • Do I need a flue? Yes. Flue sizes on these models run from 130mm to 200mm, and 150mm is the most common. Prices on most models exclude flue pipes and parts, so check the product page before you order.
  • Should I choose steel or cast iron? Steel stoves heat up quickly. Cast iron takes longer to warm up but holds its heat and keeps releasing it after the fire has died down.
  • How do I choose the right size? Match the heating capacity to your room’s volume, and size up for open-plan or poorly insulated spaces. Our team can help you choose.
  • Freestanding or built-in? Built-in units are installed into a brick chimney stack. See our built-in wood fireplaces if that suits your home, or our gas fireplaces if you prefer gas.
